Casa Nueva suburban single-family retrofit 2019

Our Big Idea

Casa Nueva retrofits an existing single family home to improve occupant comfort and health. This is achieved through reducing the home’s lifetime carbon footprint by replacing windows, adding continuous insulation, increasing airtightness, providing balanced ventilation, and connecting the house to a district energy system to distribute hot/cold stored energy to other retrofitted houses in the neighborhood. Like many other U.S. cities, Tucson is organized by a square mile grid of superblocks filled with low-density developments in need of investments. Casa Nueva is an integral component that combines with other net positive retrofit buildings, within a one square mile region, to assemble a regenerative micro community called SunBlock.
